What makes photography interesting is the enormous variety you get by way of composition and depth. And yet, these bring make the shoot more challenging for the photographer. If one has the right equipment, it is a simple matter to create a wonderful snap that remains in time for ever. Assuming you have a DSLR camera, the thing that makes the difference now is the lens.
Small and tidy compact cameras
You must understand the compact cameras are point-and-shoot cameras. You cannot change their lens or add a filter. Everything it does is already there. So, you cannot alter the functionality of the camera. First, there are two kinds of lenses – prime and zoom lenses. The simplest way to identify them is to check the numbers used to represent them. The prime lenses have only one number such as 60mm or 100mm.
Two numbers of the zoom lenses
The zoom lenses have two numbers – 18-55mm which means that you can rotate the lens around and move it forward or backward. What happens is that you change the focal length and this helps you ‘move’ closer or away from the subject. Now, compact cameras also have zoom lenses. If you use a prime lens with a DSLR camera, you get the same view all the time. You cannot zoom in or out with the prime lens.
Wide angle lens
The wide angle lens allows you to cover a wide area such as a wide group of people or a building block. The function of a telephoto lens is to capture an object that is far away from you. This is used extensively in wildlife photography. The human eye is between these two ranges. Compact cameras too have a mid-range like this but you can get some pictures that are wider than the normal range just as you can use the zoom to get closer to the object using the compact zoom.
Macro for portrait photography
If you want to get a photo of a subject very close up, you use a macro lens. This may be a zoom lens or a wide angle lens. Usually, it is a mid range lens and moderately telephoto by nature. Nikon 105mm, Canon 60mm, Nikon 60mm, and Olympus 50mm are good examples of macro lenses. The mid-range zooms have a focal length between 17mm and 60mm. You also have tilt and shift lenses that we refer to as specialist lenses. These find use in portrait photography.
